Mount Pleasant to Decide Future of New Glarus Area EMS

With Primrose now leaving for Sugar River EMS, Mount Pleasant is the last municipality still contracting with New Glarus Area EMS. Monday’s vote could decide whether the 51-year-old nonprofit enters 2027 with any municipal 911 coverage at all.

Mount Pleasant to Decide Future of New Glarus Area EMS

MONTICELLO, Wis. — The Town of Mount Pleasant Board will meet Monday night with one decision carrying consequences well beyond the township: what to do about its New Glarus Area EMS contract and emergency medical coverage for 2027.

After the Town of Primrose voted Oct. 5 to leave New Glarus Area EMS at the end of the year and contract with Sugar River EMS, Mount Pleasant became the last municipality still served by New Glarus Area EMS.

The service’s municipal base has steadily contracted. The Village and Town of New Glarus ended their contracts after 2025. York voted Sept. 8 to leave after 2026, Perry followed Sept. 21, and Primrose made the same decision last week. That leaves Monday’s Mount Pleasant vote as the final unresolved municipal contract for the coming year.

Mount Pleasant’s regular monthly meeting begins at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, at the Town Hall, N6975 Marshall Bluff Road, Monticello. The EMS issue is listed as Item 11 on the agenda: “Take action on New Glarus Ambulance contract and EMS coverage.” The agenda does not state what action the board is expected to take or identify a preferred alternative.
