The prospect of allowing ATVs and UTVs on New Glarus streets appears unlikely to move forward anytime soon after the village’s Public Works and Public Safety Committee tabled the proposal Thursday, Aug. 13.

The action came after weeks of public discussion and an earlier special listening session at which opposition to opening village streets to the vehicles substantially outweighed support. Because the matter was tabled, a two-thirds majority vote would now be required to bring it back before the committee for consideration.

That makes the Aug. 13 action considerably more consequential than simply delaying a decision. Before an ATV/UTV ordinance could reach the full Village Board for possible ratification, the committee would first have to muster enough support to remove the issue from the table, reconsider it and then recommend an ordinance or other action to the board.

The committee’s Aug. 13 agenda specifically listed ATV/UTV access in the Village of New Glarus for “consideration/discussion/possible recommendation.” Instead of advancing a recommendation, however, committee members tabled the issue indefinitely.
