MONROE, Wis. — State Highway 69 is closed to all traffic north of Monroe after a construction company struck a gas main in the roadway Monday, prompting a fire department response and a complete shutdown of the highway.

The Green County Sheriff’s Office said the closure extends from County Highway FF/Aebly Road south to Rolling Acres Road. No traffic is being allowed through the area, including local traffic and emergency vehicles.

Emergency dispatch traffic identified the incident as a construction company striking a gas main on Highway 69 just south of County Highway FF. Monroe Rural Fire Department was dispatched to the scene shortly before 10 a.m.

Radio traffic from the incident showed responders initially working to determine which utility owned the damaged line. We Energies, Alliant Energy and Northern Natural Gas were contacted as crews attempted to identify the pipeline.
