CDA Backs Albion Swords Façade Improvement Grant

Two downtown properties are moving closer to exterior improvements after Thursday’s CDA meeting, with members weighing brickwork, windows, costs and historic appearance before sending both requests on for final Village Board action.

CDA Backs Albion Swords Façade Improvement Grant

The New Glarus Community Development Authority approved two façade improvement grant requests Thursday night, including a $6,000 request from Albion Swords for work at 421 Second St. and a second $6,000 request for 538 First St., home to A Well Worn Story.

Albion Swords plans to repair deteriorated portions of its Swiss-style front façade, including the railings, decorative trim, front stoop, approach and exterior stairs. The application lists a total project cost of $14,625, with the company providing the remaining private funding.

During discussion, CDA member Carol Hassemer questioned how the lighter-colored brick around the lower storefront would fit with the rest of the repaired façade and suggested the trim and brick treatment could be made more cohesive. Albion representative Mike Sigman said the brick is natural and that the area will be power washed as part of the work.
