Three Green County committees have now weighed in on the county’s biggest pending facilities decision, setting up a County Board debate over how much to build now, how much to borrow and whether saving money today could mean operating two sites.

Committees Split on $48.5M Green County Highway Facilities Plan

MONROE, Wis. — Green County’s Highway, Property and Finance committees have made their recommendations on a long-term Highway Department facility plan, setting up a County Board decision next week on a project that could cost as much as $48.5 million.

The Highway Committee and Property Committee recommended Option 1, a full build-out of a new Highway Department campus at the county’s Pleasant View site. The Finance Committee recommended Option 2, which would build most of the same campus but leave out two cold-storage buildings and continue using part of the existing Monroe highway facility for cold storage.

County Administrator Nicholas Owen said the county revised the presentation after feedback from Monday’s committee meeting, but the underlying financial picture did not materially change. “Nothing significant changes regarding the costs, debt or estimated levy impact; we think the changes clarify the choices between the options,” Owen said.
