Conway Appears in Court; Report Details Crash

New police records say former New Glarus police officer’s blood-alcohol level was 0.239 after a Monroe crash and that officers had warned the former Darlington police chief not to drive shortly before he allegedly left a Green County event that night.

MONROE, Wis. — Six civil traffic cases against former Darlington Police Chief Szvon D. Conway remained pending Tuesday following his first scheduled court date Monday in Green County Circuit Court.

The Wisconsin Circuit Court Access index lists all six matters as “Filed Only,” with no disposition shown. The Sept. 14 proceeding was a mandatory initial appearance on traffic citations, not a criminal arraignment. The public case summaries reviewed Tuesday did not show a plea or another court date.

The cases stem from a June 19 crash in Monroe. Conway, a former New Glarus police officer and Monticello Police Chief, who was 48 at the time, is accused of first-offense operating while intoxicated, operating with a prohibited alcohol concentration, hit-and-run involving property adjacent to a highway, failing to notify law enforcement of an accident, inattentive driving and unsafe lane deviation.

All six allegations were filed as traffic-forfeiture cases rather than criminal charges. Conway has not been convicted, and the allegations remain pending.
