County Highway N Draws Safety Concerns After Highway 69 Closure

Just one day after Wisconsin Highway 69 closed between New Glarus and Monroe, several commuters are already raising alarms about traffic conditions on County Highway N, an unofficial shortcut many local drivers are using to avoid the lengthy state detour.

Drivers who contacted New Glarus 360 independently described increased traffic volumes, aggressive driving, congestion and multiple close calls along the county highway Monday.

One New Glarus commuter said a late afternoon drive to Monroe convinced them to avoid County Highway N during rush hour until the Highway 69 project is complete.

"I only occasionally drive from New Glarus to Monroe," the driver wrote. "But I had to make the trip late this afternoon, arriving in Monroe around 5 p.m. Not a good situation taking County Highway N to Highway 81 at that time of day."
