Downtown Wi-Fi Could Be Online in October
Equipment is on order and preliminary electrical work has begun for New Glarus’ free downtown Wi-Fi network, which officials now expect could be operating in October and will provide public internet access while supporting visitors, events and public safety.
New Glarus could have free public Wi-Fi operating downtown as soon as October, giving residents and visitors another way to get online while providing businesses, festival vendors and even emergency users an alternative when cellular networks become overloaded.
The project, approved unanimously by the New Glarus Village Board in July, will use the New Glarus Public Library as the hub for an outdoor wireless network extending into surrounding streets, parking areas and portions of downtown. Green County is funding the installation with remaining federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) money designated for broadband projects.
Wendy Flanagan, project manager for Green County Development Corporation (GCDC) said preliminary electrical work is underway and equipment has been ordered.
The contractor, TC Network, of Platteville, has been completing work for several school districts ahead of the new school year, which has temporarily pushed the New Glarus installation behind some of those projects.
