New Glarus and much of southern Wisconsin currently face increased odds of a warmer and potentially drier winter, according to an early seasonal outlook from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
The Climate Prediction Center’s forecast covers December 2026 through February 2027. It places southern Wisconsin within an area favoring above-normal average temperatures and near the edge of a region expected to have below-normal precipitation.
The maps represent probabilities rather than traditional weather forecasts. Above-normal temperatures do not mean every part of the winter will be mild, and below-normal precipitation does not necessarily mean New Glarus will receive less snow.
Seasonal precipitation includes the liquid equivalent of rain, snow, sleet and freezing rain. A relatively dry winter could still include several significant snowstorms, while an overall warm winter could contain short periods of bitter cold.
