Festival Crowds Are Gone, Now Comes the Measles Watch
Measles cases continue to spread in parts of Wisconsin, prompting health officials to urge residents to know their vaccination status and watch for symptoms.

The crowds have gone home from two of Green County’s biggest festival weekends of the year.

What happens next, however, cannot be known immediately.

Cheese Days in Monroe and New Glarus Oktoberfest brought thousands of residents and visitors together on consecutive weekends while one of Wisconsin’s largest measles outbreaks was spreading just across the Green County line.

And health officials now know measles virus was present in the Monroe area before either festival began.

Green County Public Health, working with the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, confirmed Friday that measles virus was detected in untreated wastewater collected in Monroe on Sept. 16, two days before Cheese Days began.

The finding does not mean Green County has a confirmed case of measles.
