New Glarus could receive its heaviest rainfall in weeks beginning Friday, with periods of showers and thunderstorms expected to continue into Saturday morning.

Forecasts differ on the exact amount, but several inches of rain are possible. Weather Underground was predicting more than 3 inches across Friday and Saturday, while the National Weather Service forecast called for 1½ to 3 inches across portions of southwestern Wisconsin, with locally higher totals possible.

The National Weather Service said heavy rainfall could begin late Thursday night or early Friday morning and continue through much of Friday. Areas along and south of Interstate 90 face the greatest risk, including southwestern Wisconsin.

The primary concerns are heavy rain and urban street flooding. Rising rivers and streams and isolated flash flooding are also possible, especially where repeated storms pass over the same locations.
