New Glarus Brewing Co. is entering Wisconsin’s first water-conservation pilot program, according to independent beer publication All About Beer. The initiative adds another step to an environmental strategy the brewery has pursued for more than a decade.
The program comes as New Glarus Brewing Co. nears completion of its $55 million Hilltop expansion, a project that incorporates water reuse, geothermal heating and cooling and other efficiency measures into the brewery’s next phase of growth.
Water conservation is not new at the brewery. A 2014 Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce sustainability profile said upgrades to its clean-in-place system reduced water use by 12% even as production increased 15.5%. The same report said treated wastewater was being reused to irrigate the brewery’s Hop Garden and Bier Garden landscaping.
