New Glarus Expands Rules for Scooters, Hoverboards
New Glarus has formally expanded its rules for skateboards and play vehicles to include scooters, electric scooters and electric hoverboards, clarifying where the devices may be used and giving police clearer authority to address unsafe riding.
The Village of New Glarus is reminding residents about new restrictions affecting scooters, electric scooters and electric hoverboards following passage of Ordinance 26-06 by the Village Board on Aug. 5.
The ordinance amends Section 112-9(A) of the village code, which regulates skateboards and play vehicles. The change specifically adds scooters, electric scooters and electric hoverboards to the types of devices covered by the existing rules.
As New Glarus 360 reported following the Aug. 5 meeting, village officials said the update was needed because newer types of personal transportation devices were not clearly addressed by language written before many of them became common. The change gives police clearer authority when riders operate them unsafely or disregard traffic controls.
Village officials also emphasized during the discussion that education and safety, rather than immediately issuing citations to young riders, were important parts of implementing the updated ordinance. Families may not realize that many of the same restrictions applying to skateboards also apply to scooters and similar devices.
