New Glarus is getting an international turn in the spotlight in a new Netflix series that explores the foods, traditions and communities that have shaped American cuisine.
The village is featured prominently in Episode 4 of On the Road, an eight-part documentary series hosted by longtime America’s Test Kitchen chef, writer and television personality Bryan Roof. The episode, “Wisconsin Cheesemakers and Artisans,” premiered Aug. 18 as part of the show’s first season.
Roof’s Wisconsin journey includes stops at Marieke Gouda in Thorp and Chalet Cheese Cooperative in Monroe, but between those destinations he spends more than six minutes of the episode exploring New Glarus and the connections between the community’s Swiss heritage, food and dairy traditions.
Roof first meets Andy Schulz, identified in the program as director of the New Glarus Jodlerklub and Männerchor. Schulz discusses the settlement of New Glarus and the importance cheesemaking once played in the community, including a time when numerous cheese factories operated in and around the village.
