New Glarus Police Chief Jeff Sturdevant will mark 25 years as a full-time member of the New Glarus Police Department on Sunday, Oct. 11, a milestone the village recognized a few days early with a surprise tribute at Wednesday night’s Village Board meeting.

Village Administrator Kelsey Jenson, Village Board President Roger Truttmann, trustees and village staff paused the meeting to recognize Sturdevant and thank him for a quarter-century of service. Several of his officers and family members were there for the surprise, and the village presented him with a plaque commemorating the milestone.

Sturdevant’s history with the department began a few months before his full-time anniversary. He was hired as a part-time officer in August 2001 and became a full-time officer on Oct. 11, 2001, one full month after 9/11. He said law enforcement had been his goal since childhood. He earned a four-year degree at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, put himself through the police academy and began applying for jobs in the area.

New Glarus was among several agencies that gave him an early opportunity, and when a full-time position opened, Sturdevant took it. Other offers followed, he said, but he had made a decision to stay loyal to the department that had first given him a chance. Twenty-five years later, he is still here.
