Open Enrollment Brings 151 Students to New Glarus Schools

As the New Glarus School District serves fewer children who live within its boundaries, students arriving from neighboring districts are becoming a more visible part of its classrooms, raising questions about enrollment trends and future planning.

Open Enrollment Brings 151 Students to New Glarus Schools

The New Glarus School District enrolled 151 students from outside its boundaries through Wisconsin’s public school open-enrollment program this fall, the highest incoming total in five years of district enrollment reports. Another 42 New Glarus residents attended schools in other districts through the program.

That left New Glarus with a net gain of 109 students through open enrollment, up from a net gain of 87 in 2022. The latest figures come from the district’s pupil count, taken Sept. 18.

The number of incoming open-enrollment students has risen from 127 in 2022 to 151 in 2026, an increase of nearly 19%. During the same period, outgoing open enrollment changed little, from 40 students to 42.

Of the 907 students counted in New Glarus classrooms this September, approximately one in six — 16.6% — were students from outside the district attending through open enrollment.
