The New Glarus Village Board tabled a proposed blasting permit for the Prairie Haus II senior housing project Wednesday, Aug. 19, after nearby residents raised concerns about protecting their properties during construction and representatives of the developer and blasting company were unable to attend the meeting as planned. 

Six residents from the Valle Tell subdivision attended the meeting regarding the permit. The board opted to postpone action until a future meeting so additional preventative measures for neighboring and nearby properties can be discussed. Representatives of the developer and blasting company were not at Wednesday’s meeting but are expected to attend the Sept. 2 Village Board meeting.

The permit application says blasting may be necessary to excavate rock for Prairie Haus II, although whether blasting will actually be required will depend on conditions encountered during excavation. The previously submitted blast plan calls for nearby residents to receive advance notice, limits blasting to weekdays and includes vibration monitoring near adjacent buildings and utilities.

The board approved the remainder of the consent agenda and several other items Wednesday, including a mobile food vendor permit for Persephone Reigns, a special event permit for the New Glarus Car Show and resolutions closing the checking account associated with the completed water reservoir project and authorizing applications for state urban forestry grants.
