PRIMROSE, Wis. — The Town of Primrose delayed choosing an ambulance provider during a three-hour meeting Monday and will schedule a meeting with Sugar River EMS before deciding whether to remain with New Glarus Area EMS. Officials said they need clearer answers about staffing, response times, finances and costs.
The discussion came less than a week after the Town of York voted to end its New Glarus Area EMS contract Dec. 31 and petition to join the Sugar River EMS District beginning Jan. 1, 2027. York cited staffing depth, response times, patient care and the ability to participate in the district’s governance.
Primrose officials said New Glarus Area EMS currently costs the town about $23 per resident, or roughly $10,000 annually. Sugar River EMS would cost about $70 per resident, raising the town’s estimated annual expense to approximately $30,000.
Despite the difference, board members said they did not want to save money at the expense of emergency response or patient safety. They want comparable information from both providers, including staffing available around the clock, response times and the ability to handle simultaneous calls.
