State Champs Coming to New Glarus Friday

Defending Division 6 champion Darlington brings a 17-game winning streak and the state's No. 1 Division 5 ranking to New Glarus, where the 3-0, No. 8 Glarner Knights await Friday night in a matchup of unbeaten SWAL contenders at home.

State Champs Coming to New Glarus Friday

There are regular-season football games, and then there are nights that tell a team something about itself.

New Glarus will get one of those nights Friday when unbeaten Darlington comes to The Bank of New Glarus Field at the New Glarus Community Sports Complex for a 7 p.m. Southwest Wisconsin Activities League (SWAL) game. Both teams are 3-0, but the Redbirds arrive as the defending state champions, No. 1 in Division 5 and winners of 17 straight.

Darlington went 14-0 last season and defeated Edgar 42-18 at Camp Randall Stadium to win the WIAA Division 6 championship, its first state title in 30 years. The Redbirds moved up to Division 5 for 2026.

New Glarus will not enter Friday simply as the next team on Darlington's schedule. The Glarner Knights are 3-0 themselves, No. 8 in Division 5 in the latest rankings and 13-2 since the start of the 2025 season.
