Rainfall Totals for New Glarus Area, Tornado Damage Update
Heavy rain, strong winds and severe thunderstorms swept across southern Wisconsin Wednesday, bringing more than an inch of rain to New Glarus and a confirmed tornado that caused significant damage in Belleville.
A round of thunderstorms delivered soaking rain, gusty winds and severe weather across southern Wisconsin on Wednesday, with New Glarus receiving 1.34 inches of rain while nearby Belleville was struck by a tornado that damaged homes, businesses and trees.
The storms developed during the afternoon and intensified into the evening as warm, humid air fueled multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms. While most of the New Glarus area experienced heavy rain and strong winds, the most significant damage occurred just to the northeast in Belleville, where a tornado touched down and left a path of destruction through parts of the community.
New Glarus picked up more rainfall from Wednesday's storm system, pushing the village's June rainfall total to 6.44 inches as of early Thursday morning. The latest round of precipitation continued what has been an unusually wet month across much of southern Wisconsin, with many communities now approaching or exceeding six inches of rain since June 1.
