UPDATE: Wisconsin Cheese Group Responds to Clean Water Case
A Wisconsin Cheese Group spokesman says the company has accepted responsibility for the 2022 wastewater violations in Monticello, made substantial improvements since then and says the federal fine will not affect local jobs or operations.
MONTICELLO, Wis. — Wisconsin Cheese Group says it has accepted responsibility for wastewater violations at its Monticello plant and has made substantial investments in the facility since 2022.
The company spoke with New Glarus 360 following last week’s sentencing of Wisconsin Cheese Group LLC to one year of probation and a $237,500 fine for criminally violating the Clean Water Act. The company was also ordered to make facility improvements and work with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources on future permitting issues.
A company spokesman said the violations occurred during a period of growth in 2022, when Wisconsin Cheese Group consolidated production at its Monticello plant and wastewater management did not keep pace with that growth.
“We’ve accepted responsibility for that,” the spokesman said. “This matter involved wastewater sent to the village municipal sewer system. No product was affected.”
