Two communities still tied to New Glarus Area EMS are taking a closer look at their ambulance coverage, creating another potential turning point for an organization whose service territory already shrank substantially at the end of 2025.
The Town of York scheduled meetings with both providers Thursday, Sept. 3, first meeting with New Glarus Area EMS at its 401 Third Street station and then touring Sugar River EMS. The next step could come quickly: York’s Tuesday, Sept. 8, Town Board agenda includes an item that reads: “discuss and possibly take action on EMS coverage.”
The Town of Primrose, who has also contracted EMS services with New Glarus Area EMS, discussed its arrangement with New Glarus EMS last month, but took no action. It is now digging deeper. A town notice says officials will meet with Sugar River EMS at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, at the New Glarus Fire Department, 218 4th Ave., just across the street from New Glarus Area EMS and where Sugar River EMS operates its New Glarus station. A quorum of the Primrose Town Board may attend. The notice says no decisions will be made at that meeting.
Neither town has announced that it intends to leave New Glarus Area EMS. But the two reviews are significant because York and Primrose are part of a much smaller group of communities remaining with the New Glarus-based nonprofit after last year’s upheaval.
