Updated Sheriff’s Office and Jail Plans Move Forward in Green County
Green County officials reviewed updated plans for a proposed Sheriff’s Office and Jail project that could cost up to $85 million and serve the county through 2045.
Updated schematic drawings, refined design plans, and a 3D tour of the proposed Green County Sheriff’s Office and Jail were presented this week to the Finance and Accounting Committee, Property, Parks, and Insurance Committee, and the Law Enforcement and Public Safety Committee. The presentation marks a significant step forward in a years-long effort to replace the county’s aging jail and law enforcement facilities.
Sheriff Cody Kanable shared with New Glarus 360 a first look at the new facility—a preliminary external rendering of the front of the building. “Nothing is approved yet,” Kanable said. “Things are still very preliminary.”
The current Green County Jail, originally built in 1958 with an addition completed in 1981, has reached the end of its useful life, according to county officials. The 70-bed facility is undersized for today’s demands and hampered by deteriorating infrastructure, obsolete equipment, and space constraints that limit safety, security, and efficiency. Officials say the new building will not only modernize jail operations but also improve working conditions for Sheriff’s Office staff and enhance public safety across the county.
